Jordan Lambastes National Energy Tax
Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) blasted today's so-called "cap-and-trade" bill as one of the most destructive pieces of legislation he has seen in his two-and-a-half years in Congress.
"President Obama said that electricity rates would skyrocket' under this cap-and-trade system. Now we know the average American household can expect a $3,100 increase in utility bills per year because of this bill," said Jordan. "It is terrible legislation that will hurt families and cost Americans jobs - particularly the manufacturing jobs in our part of America."
Jordan said the 1,200-page cap-and-trade bill was finished being written about 3:00 am this morning, and members were given only three hours to debate the bill before a vote was called. Jordan also said that in a rush to pass the bill, Democrat leaders only allowed 1 of the 224 proposed amendments to be considered.
"Americans have a right to be outraged! Congress should be focused on cutting energy costs and increasing competitiveness to turn our economy around, but this bill gives a big payout to the radical environmentalists while lowering the boom on the average American," Jordan added. "The only workers who will benefit from this short-sighted bill are those living in China and India."
Jordan said that out of the nearly 1,000 calls, faxes and emails his offices received about the topic in the past few days, his constituents have been opposed to cap-and-trade by a 250-1 margin.
The bill passed by a vote of 219 - 212 with 44 Democrats joining 168 Republicans in opposition. It now heads to the United States Senate for further consideration.
