U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today made the following statement after meeting with the Honduran Congressional Delegation that is in Washington, D.C. to discuss the situation in Honduras.
"A very eloquent presentation was made by ex-President Ricardo Maduro and the other members of the delegation to bring to light the facts of the events in Honduras, which have not been fully known and discussed until now. The fact is that a very constitutional process took place but the appearance was harmed by the way President Zelaya was removed from the country. By Honduran operation of law, the president's actions, undertaken by Zelaya himself, triggered several automatic constitutional actions resulting in his removal from office.
"Being where we are now, it is important we support the mediation being initiated by President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica. I don't think it is clear whether President Zelaya should return to power; that is something the Honduran people and the mediation process should decide."
