Congressman Adler To Question Lack Of Oversight At Philadelphia VA Medical Center During Second Congressional Hearing

One week after a doctor at the Philadelphia Veterans Hospital refused to accept responsibility for medical errors, Congressman John Adler will participate in the second congressional hearing on the mistreatment of almost 100 veterans. Congressman Adler, a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, will participate in the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing on Wednesday, July 8 at 1:00 PM to examine reports of outrageous errors in the prostate cancer unit. The hearing is expected to be streamed live at: http://www.veterans.house.gov/.

At a field hearing in Philadelphia last week, Dr. Gary Kao, the doctor accused of making mistakes during the treatment of cancer patients, refused to accept responsibility for his errors.

On Wednesday, July 8, Congressman Adler will continue his line of questioning to determine how these mistakes were missed for so long. "We do not yet have satisfactory answers about the lack of oversight that allowed our veterans to be treated so badly. We must get at the supervisory failures in the system, and hold those responsible for these errors accountable."

The Subcommittee invited Dr. Gary Kao, representatives from the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, the University of Pennsylvania, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and numerous departments at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Congressman Adler participated in a field hearing hosted by Senator Arlen Specter on Monday, June 29. One week before that, Congressman Adler sent a letter to House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner calling for a House hearing to fully investigate the matter.
