Senator Mike Johanns today voted to support two amendments that will help deter illegal immigration. The first amendment would make E-Verify permanent, ensuring that this program would remain effective and available to help employers easily determine the legal status of their employees. In addition, the amendment would require federal contractors to use E-Verify to determine the legal status of all employees while working on federal government contracts. Another amendment Senator Johanns supported would mandate that at least 700 miles of pedestrian fencing along the southwest border be completed by December 31, 2010.
"These two amendments are necessary and important steps that will help curb the number of illegal immigrants entering our country," said Johanns. "This issue affects our nation's security and our overall commitment to the rule of law. It is critical that we further secure our borders and ensure our nation's workforce is here legally."
