President Plays Politics With Stem Cell Research

Statement

Date: March 9, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Tom Price issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's executive order overturning restrictions on taxpayer-funded embryonic stem-cell research.

"By lifting restrictions on federal funding, the President finds himself at the top of a very slippery slope," said Congressman Price. "Ignoring moral questions is not change in which Americans can believe. Stem cell research is a remarkably complex scientific issue. It must be addressed in an open, honest, and deliberative way. As a physician, I'm thrilled with recent advances in medicine in both adult and cord stem cell research. Scientific evidence, not political patronage, demonstrates the ability for researchers to solve our moral dilemma without having President Obama force taxpayers to subsidize research that will destroy human embryos.

"Successful research does not have to come at the expense of human life. I call on President Obama to reconsider his decision."
