Lance Condemns Violence In Iran; Calls On President To End His Silence

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Leonard Lance (NJ-07) today joined an overwhelming majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in voting for a congressional resolution supporting the dissidents in Iran who are protesting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's contested win in the June 12 presidential election.

"Today the Congress is recognizing the brave Iranian citizens who have taken to the streets of Tehran in the name of freedom, free and fair democratic elections and a desire to influence the direction of their nation," said Lance "These core principles are fundamental to all Americans.

"It is not up to this U.S. Congress to determine who won Iran's disputed June 12 election," continued Lance. "But it is imperative that Congress speak out in one loud voice in condemning the violence and support the Iranian people's fundamental right to express their views."

Lance also called on President Obama to join Congress in expressing support

"It is my hope that the Obama Administration will join Congress in expressing strong American support for Iranians who are standing for free and fair elections, democracy and basic rights," Lance concluded.
