Fortenberry Offers Plan for Responsible Expansion of SCHIP

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry last week reintroduced legislation he authored that would reform the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The SCHIP Plus Act would offer eligible families the choice of retaining coverage for their children in the State Children's Health Insurance Program or using SCHIP funds to help pay for a family insurance plan, saving both family and taxpayer dollars.

"SCHIP is an important program for many families across Nebraska and nationwide, and I support its expansion," Fortenberry said. "My plan does this responsibly, while empowering families to choose the best plans for them, simplifying the process of accessing quality care, and making family coverage plans more affordable. SCHIP Plus is a conscientious, common sense reform of the current program, and should be included in any SCHIP reauthorization."

SCHIP has helped secure health coverage for millions of American children since its creation in 1997. Its authorization was extended in 2007 to cover then-current enrollment levels through March 2009.
