Hare: Committee Passage Of Advanced Funding For Veterans' Health Care A Step In The Right Direction

Congressman Phil Hare today released the following statement after the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs passed a Fiscal Year 2010 appropriations bill that includes advanced funding for veterans' health care.

"The inclusion of advanced appropriations in this legislation is a significant victory for our nation's veterans. If enacted, this will guarantee a baseline amount of funding for veterans' health care over the next two fiscal years. While I believe we must pass legislation applying advanced appropriations to all future years, its addition to this bill will help ensure that the men and women who serve our nation in uniform receive the best care money can buy."

Hare is a longtime advocate for improving the delivery of veterans' health care funding. In the 110th Congress, he authored legislation which would make VA health care a mandatory spending item within the federal budget, like Social Security or Medicare.

He is also an original cosponsor of advanced appropriations legislation—the Veterans' Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act of 2009. Click here to read a joint op-ed written by Hare and House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner in support of advanced appropriations.
