U.S. Congressman Allen Boyd hosted a district-wide telephone town hall meeting tonight to discuss the economy and the budget resolution that the House of Representatives will be considering this week. Over 4,300 North Floridians participated in the tele-town hall meeting.
Congressman Boyd opened the meeting with an overview of the steps that Congress has taken to address the financial crisis and our economic challenges and then outlined his role in helping draft a budget resolution that sets the country on a path towards fiscal responsibility.
"Holding a tele-town hall is a great way to reach people across all 16 counties of the 2nd Congressional District at once," said Congressman Boyd. "I know that the issue at the forefront of everyone's minds is the state of our economy, and I was eager to discuss the steps that we have taken to address our serious fiscal and economic challenges."
Much of the discussion during the tele-town hall meeting focused on the stimulus bill that was passed by Congress and signed into law and the Fiscal Year 2010 House Budget Resolution that will be considered by the House of Representatives later this week.
"While not perfect, the stimulus bill includes responsible tax relief and important investments that will help create jobs, such as infrastructure spending, and we're already seeing these stimulus funds at work in our communities," Boyd said. "Additionally, I believe that passing a budget is critical if we are going to be successful in putting our country on the road to economic recovery. This week, the House will consider a budget that, for the first time in years, is honest about our fiscal realities and includes strict budget enforcement tools. It will take time to put our country back on a fiscally sustainable path, but by using a budget framework that includes statutory pay-as-you-go budget discipline as a starting point, like this budget does, we can get there. We have much more work ahead of us, and I will continue working in Congress to help blunt the effects of this economic downturn in the short-term and to chart a course to fiscal responsibility and economic growth in the long-term."
