Miller Calls On Obama Administration To Freeze U.N. Payments

Issues: Foreign Aid

One day after United Nations (U.N.) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the United States a "deadbeat" donor to the world body during a Congressional hearing, Congressman Jeff Miller has called for the Obama administration to cease payments to the U.N.

"The United States is the single largest contributor to the U.N. paying over $1 Billion annually. That's 22% of the U.N's budget," said Miller. "What do we get in return? The U.N. appeases dictators, drags its feet on the War on Terror, disbands its anti-fraud unit, aids the oil-for-food scandal, inflames the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and supports global taxation. Enough is enough!"

Ban's comments come on the heels of meeting with President Obama where, according to office of the Secretary-General, they "spoke at length about strengthening the United Nations to be able to play a critical role in managing the full range of challenges facing the world today. They discussed the critical importance of ensuring that the United Nations has the support necessary to fulfill the important tasks asked of it."

Earlier on Wednesday, Ban also urged Congress to adopt climate change legislation to boost chances for securing a global climate agreement. The accord would be presented at a U.N.-sponsored conference in Copenhagen in December.

"In this difficult economy, I would rather see the money go to deficit reduction or the prevention of tax increases" added Miller. "The administration should freeze further payments to the U.N."
