Patrick-Murray Administration Awards $2.5 Million for Beverly Waterfront Redevelopment
Governor Deval Patrick today announced he has awarded the city of Beverly $2.5 million from the state's capital investment program to assist with the city's waterfront redevelopment plan, helping to create jobs and spur economic development in the area.
The funding will support infrastructure work along the harbor's edge where development property has sat vacant for more than two decades.
"Investments like these are critical to communities across Massachusetts," said Governor Patrick. "Our Administration will continue to partner with cities and towns to cultivate new opportunities that are vital to job growth, economic prosperity and our Commonwealth's future."
The funding for this project is included in the Patrick-Murray Administration's $1.7 billion capital plan for fiscal year 2009.
"Even in difficult economic times, it is critically important to invest for the long term," said Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray. "The Beverly waterfront project is a great example of this type of investmentone that will create jobs both now and in the future."
"This proposal is an extraordinary opportunity for residents, businesses, and tourists of the North Shore," said Senator Fred Berry. "Congratulations to Mayor Scanlon and his administration for their vision in reviving the Beverly's waterfront. I share the Mayor's view that investment and redevelopment of the area will serve as a catalyst to spur growth in the local economy."
"We are very pleased to receive notification that our city will be receiving $2.5 million from last year's bond bill for planned work on Beverly's waterfront infrastructure," said State Representative Mary Grant. "This work is a key piece to the economic development of the downtown as it is a gateway to the city. In combination with the MBTA parking garage, we now have two firm capital commitments for development projects that will enhance the vitality of our city. These projects have been 20 plus years in the making and are now coming together because of persistent attention and coordination."
"This money will help us improve the condition of our waterfront and spur economic development," said Mayor William F. Scanlon, Jr. "It is important and much appreciated."
