McKeon Statement as First Guantanamo Terrorist Detainee Arrives in United States

Today, Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-CA) issued the following statement following the arrival of the first Guantanamo terrorist detainee to the United States. The Administration transferred Ahmed Ghailani, 35, to New York early Tuesday morning. Ghailani is an accused co-conspirator of the August. 7, 1998, U.S. Embassy bombings in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, that killed 234 people.

"The transfer of accused terrorist, Ahmed Ghailani, to New York is a distressing political move by the Administration. Unfortunately, in an attempt to score political points, the Administration hastily made a decision to close down Guantanamo Bay, which houses thousands of known terrorists, murders, and extremist criminals. The decision came without proper attention and detail as to where those detainees would be relocated, which will ultimately force domestic law enforcement agencies to absorb and supervise international terrorists.

"These Guantanamo detainees are trained and even bred to foment dissent against Americans. Do we really want them engaged with our prison population, where they will inevitably generate a following of hatred towards the United States government and the rule of law? This is just the start of what's to come as one-by-one terrorist detainees are brought to American soil."
