U.S. Reps. Gabrielle Giffords' Statement on the Nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords today released the following statement on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Twenty-eight years ago, Sandra Day O'Connor made history when she became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The trail blazed by this Arizonan is the one Sonia Sotomayor follows today.

The nomination of Judge Sotomayor to the Court represents a groundbreaking moment in the history of our nation. If confirmed by the Senate, she will be the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the Court. One of America's greatest strengths is our diversity. Our major institutions of government should reflect who we are and this nomination moves us closer to that worthwhile goal.

Judge Sotomayor would bring to the Court a first-rate education, a wealth of experience, and an inspirational personal journey. Since she was first nominated to the federal bench by President George H.W. Bush, she has proven herself to be an able, thoughtful jurist. Like many other Americans, I am anxious to learn more about Judge Sotomayor in the weeks to come.
