Castle welcomes U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy Preliminary Report

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Delaware Congressman Mike Castle today welcomed the preliminary report released by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, saying it contains strong recommendations to improve the quality of our waterways, create a balanced approach to fishing and improve public education about the sustainability of our oceans.

"The time has come for an updated 21st century national ocean policy to address the ever changing needs of our environment and our economy. I welcome this preliminary report as it outlines key reforms necessary to ensure the future of our oceans for fishermen, environmentalists, researchers and the general public.

"While Delaware is blessed with miles of beaches, used by millions of tourists every summer, our natural resources take a beating and need to be protected. This report focuses on some of these issues including the need for measurable water pollution reduction goals particularly for nonpoint sources, fisheries management and increased communication among those responsible for establishing and implementing ocean policy," Castle said.

Castle also pointed out the University of Delaware's role as a Sea Grant College saying that today's Ocean Report rightly focuses on the need to increase public education about our oceans.

"At one of our most pristine beaches in Lewes, Delaware, the University has a renowned Sea Grant program which conducts critical research regarding the health and quality of our oceans and public awareness campaigns as well. This report's recommendation will fit hand-in-hand with the activities underway at the University," Castle said.
