Sessions Applauds Democrats for Supporting Clean Troop Funding Bill

Press Release

Date: May 14, 2009
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Congressman Pete Sessions (TX-32) today released the following statement regarding bipartisan approval for funding for continued military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan:

"In an era of one-party rule in Washington, I am pleased that Democrats and Republicans came together today in bipartisan support for funding our troops in the ongoing War on Terror. With no timelines, no troop withdrawal mandates, no benchmarks, no rubberstamp funding for Gitmo detainee transfers, and no arbitrary standards to hamstring military decision making, this troop funding bill pulls the plug on political gamesmanship. For years, critical troop supplemental funding has been held hostage and politicized by liberal, San Francisco-style anti-troop agendas to force arbitrary troop withdrawals and micromanage military commanders on the ground.

"Our troops deserve far better. As forces continue to draw down in Iraq and build up in Afghanistan, our troops should know that Congress stands ready to support them in their missions and to supply the resources they need to succeed and return home safely. Today's bipartisan work should be the beginning of a new era of Democrats placing the success and security of our troops over the radical agendas of liberal interest groups."
