Rep. McCarthy Recognizes National Teacher Appreciation Week

Press Release

Date: May 5, 2009
Issues: K-12 Education

"Today, I join thousands of students, parents and communities across the country who wish to recognize and acknowledge our teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week, taking place this year from May 3 through May 9, 2009. Sponsored by the National PTA, National Teacher Appreciation week is a celebration to honor and thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to the education of our children.

As a Member of the House Education and Labor Committee, I have the utmost respect for our educators and the work they do in our communities. Therefore, I have cosponsored a resolution that calls for a National Teacher Day to honor and celebrate our nation's teachers. This resolution expresses the sense of Congress that there should be a national day of recognition for our nation's teachers on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, as recognized by the National Education Association. In addition, the resolution would call on the President to issue a proclamation to the American people to observe and celebrate a National Teacher Day.

In reality, there is no way to truly say thank you for all that our teachers do each and every day to encourage, instruct and guide our students. Teachers provide motivation and give our children the tools they need to succeed in life. They are our future and teachers give them inspiration. This week I encourage everyone to show their gratitude to teachers for the tireless commitment to the work they do every day and for the impact they have in our lives."
