BISHOP INTRODUCES OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION PROMOTION ACT

H.R. 1896 to promote land conservation through tax incentives

Last week, Congressman Tim Bishop (NY-1) introduced H.R. 1896, the Open Space Preservation Promotion Act of 2009. This legislation, similar to legislation introduced by Congressman Bishop in previous years, would promote the conservation of open spaces through tax incentives.

"Land conservation is now more important than ever," Congressman Bishop said. "Therefore, we should provide stronger incentives for people who wish to protect open spaces when they sell their land or development rights. This legislation provides such incentives by revising the tax code to eliminate the ambiguity on capital gains taxes."

"We are supportive of Congressman Bishop's legislation," said Joe Gergala, Executive Director of the Long Island Farm Bureau. "Going forward, H.R. 1896 would help to preserve much of the remaining farmland on Long Island. We have preserved 15,000 acres of farmland already, but another 19,000 acres are yet to be saved. This legislation would help municipalities to buy more land now."
