Issues: Veterans

Congressman Ron Klein (FL-22) today announced his strong support for a program to streamline medical recording keeping for South Florida veterans. As announced by President Obama, Defense Secretary Gates and Veterans' Affairs Secretary Shinseki, the new program will create a Joint Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record, a comprehensive system to encompass both VA and DOD records.
The new streamlined system will eventually contain all medical and administrative records from the day an individual enters military service throughout their career and after they leave the service.

This modernized system is particularly important for South Florida veterans. Many veterans in our community have previously lived in Northern or other states and received care there, and still others maintain part-time residences in both Florida and another state. As veterans move, either permanently or seasonally, their complete and error-free medical records should move with them. A sophisticated database such as the Joint Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record ensures just that.
"The men and women who have served this country in uniform deserve the highest quality health care available, and in order to provide that, we must utilize the latest technologies to streamline care and reduce medical errors," Klein said. "This new system is a critical step towards modernizing our health care system and delivering benefits in the most efficient, effective manner possible. I applaud President Obama, as well as Secretaries Gates and Shinseki, for their leadership on this important project, which has the potential to serve as a model for the nation."
