Tiahrt Supports Defense of Marriage Act

Press Release

Date: April 1, 2009
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense Marriage

U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today co-sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman and bars federal and state courts from dictating a redefinition of traditional marriage.

"Throughout America's history, marriage between a man and a woman has been fundamental to the health of our society," said Tiahrt. "In recent years we have witnessed an attempt to re-define marriage through the court system and in different regions of our country. The Defense of Marriage Act ensures that the definition of marriage is not decided upon by activist judges who take it upon themselves to redefine this foundational social institution. Constitutionally affirming that marriage is between a man and a woman will prevent future mischaracterizations of marriage and will ensure continued uniformity for how the federal government treats and promotes traditional marriage for a healthy society."

The Defense of Marriage Act would:

* Define marriage in the United States as a legal union of one man and one woman.
* Expressly prohibit the judicial power of the United States or of any state from being used to redefine marriage as anything other than a union between one man and one woman.
* Resolve questions relating to the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act by incorporating language which would prohibit the courts from imposing the policy of one state on other states.
