Weekly Update: Bankrupting Budget and Nevada Military

Statement

Date: March 27, 2009

Bankrupting the Future of Our Country
President Obama's budget has been the hot topic on the Hill this week and rightly so. Never before have we seen a proposal that will so surely bankrupt future generations of Americans. Under President Obama's budget, children born in the United States this year will take their first breath with $26,000 of debt already in their name. Ten years from now, every American baby will enter this world with more than $50,000 in debt—enough to pay for a college education. This is simply inexcusable.

The President's $3.7 trillion budget will prevent our children and grandchildren from enjoying the America that so many have fought to preserve and protect. The United States of America cannot sustain Obama's economic plans and Nevadans are rightly concerned.
I spoke with several thousand Nevadans this week during a Tele-Town Hall meeting. The anger and frustration from these Nevadans was palpable and understandable. Many are worried about the future of America.

Rahm Emanuel, President Obama's Chief of Staff, has stated that a crisis is a terrible thing to waste. I worry that this administration is using this economic crisis as an opportunity to flood our country with a debt level from which we cannot recover. Instead of moving forward with thought and caution, this need for Instant gratification will bankrupt future generations.

Ensuring Success at Nellis Air Force Base
As many of Nevada's servicemen and -women fight to defend our freedoms across the globe, I welcome the meetings I take with our military generals to receive updates on our troops. This week, I met with Major General Hoog to discuss operations at Nellis Air Force Base. As Commander of the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, Major General Hoog and I discussed planning for Nellis' long-term viability and the solar panels at the base. I have enjoyed the times that I have met with Major General Hoog, and I congratulate him on his new assignment as Deputy Combined Forces Air Component Commander, U.S. Central Command. As always, I will continue to ensure that Nevada's military is equipped to continue to defend our country.
