U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement in response to the Pentagon's announcement that the leadership of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, will be sent to Afghanistan to lead military efforts there.

"As the Pentagon announced earlier today, the leadership of the 82nd Airborne Division will soon deploy to Afghanistan to lead military efforts as part of a normal troop rotation. When I visited Fort Bragg two weeks ago, and again at Camp Lejeune on Friday, I had the privilege of speaking with Major General C. Michael Scaparrotti, the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, among many other military leaders currently on post in Fayetteville. The professionalism and skill of the 82nd Airborne is a source of pride to all North Carolinians.

"I have repeatedly emphasized the importance of devoting greater resources and manpower to Afghanistan to defeat the terrorists who attacked us on September 11th and continue to seek our harm. I am glad that President Obama, his National Security Team and the generals on the ground are committed to devoting the necessary resources to fighting terrorism in Afghanistan.

"The 82nd Airborne Division is one of the finest in our armed forces, and I know they will continue to make North Carolina and this country proud. These soldiers and their families deserve our full support while they are serving our country away from home, protecting our nation and our way of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families as we pray for their safe return and the successful execution of their mission."
