Marchant Statement on Passage of "Stimulus" Bill
Today, Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) released the following statement regarding his vote opposing final passage of the "stimulus" package.
"Today, the House passed the single largest spending bill in history, saddling the generations of American taxpayers with debt as far as the eye can see. This after the one thousand-plus page bill was delivered to us less than 15 hours before we voted.
"Rather than working together to put together a real stimulus bill that would provide dramatic tax relief for families and small businesses, the authors of this bill chose to cobble together a forty year wish list of pork-barrel projects that have little to no stimulative value. This bill is payback to their special interests at the expense of the American people who continue to suffer while Congress writes checks for programs we do not need with money we do not have.
"Timely, targeted and temporary, this bill is not. The utter lack of accountability and wasteful spending this bill represents will make the American people forget about the boondoggle the $700 billion bailout bill has become.
"The suffering of the American people during this recession is undeniable. Inaction was not an option. But this bill will do little to relieve that suffering. The gross negligence this bill represents with respect to addressing our current economic situation is saddening and unfortunate, yet predictable."
