Gov. Perdue Calls for Quick Federal Economic Stimulus Approval
Meets with N.C. Congressional Delegation About State Impact
Today Governor Bev Perdue called on North Carolina's Congressional delegation to pass a substantial economic stimulus and recovery package that will rapidly put North Carolinians back to work. Governor Perdue met with North Carolina's Congressional delegation, President-elect Obama's transition office and the National Governors Association while in Washington, D.C.
"In one of the most difficult economic times that North Carolina and America have faced, we must work together to move our state forward," said Gov. Perdue. "While I will make tough choices when it comes to balancing the state's budget, I will continue to find ways to grow new jobs and get our people back to work, and to invest in our future."
Infrastructure and capital investment projects can put people to work quickly. Governor Perdue asked for quick passage of the stimulus package and an expedited permitting process that still maintains environmental protections. The Office of State Budget and Management has identified $18 billion dollars in shovel-ready infrastructure and capital needs statewide.
In addition to the job growth and economic stimulus, Governor Perdue asked that any proposal include recovery efforts for states facing critical budget shortfalls during this recession. Updated revenue figures show North Carolina faces a $2 billion plus shortfall below forecast revenues.
