Ros-Lehtinen Condemns Attack on Synagogue in Venezuela
Declares latest vandalism part of a pattern of anti-Semitism

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today condemned the attack on a synagogue in Caracas, Venezuela. After overpowering security guards, armed men destroyed religious objects and sprayed "Death to All" and other hateful slogans, including those calling for Jews to be expelled from the country. The attack is the latest in a series of anti-Semitic events undertaken after the Chavez regime expelled the Israeli ambassador and condemned Israel's campaign to neutralize Islamist militants in Gaza. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"The attack on the synagogue in Caracas is a deplorable and cowardly act of anti-Semitism and should be condemned by all responsible nations. The Venezuelan regime not only failed to provide adequate protection to the Jewish institutions, but has also fomented anti-Semitism and has used it as a political tool.

"Venezuela's leader, Hugo Chavez, has a close relationship with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has denied the Holocaust and called for Israel to be ‘wiped off the map.' Chavez has also given support to the Islamist militant group Hamas for its attacks from Gaza against Israel.
