Governor Doyle Signs Bill into Law to Extend Unemployment Assistance

Governor Jim Doyle today signed a bill into law to extend unemployment relief for qualified workers in the state.

"The most severe consequence of the national economic collapse is that many of the state's best workers, through no fault of their own, are unemployed," Governor Doyle said. "I want to thank the Legislature for acting quickly to get critical federal assistance to Wisconsin workers and families."

Assembly Bill 5 allows certain unemployed workers in the state to receive extended federal unemployment benefits. The law provides relief to both unemployed workers and employers across the state.

Governor Doyle thanked Representatives Sinicki, Sheridan and Fitzgerald, as well as Senators Coggs, Decker and Fitzgerald for their work on the bill.

Workforce Development Secretary Roberta Gassman praised the bill signing saying, "On behalf of workers, employers and the Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council representing them, I thank Governor Doyle and the Legislature for swift action on this important legislation."
