Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker Joe Straus Today Held a Press Conference Discussing Their Priorities Going Into the 81st Legislative Session

Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker Joe Straus today held a press conference discussing their priorities going into the 81st Legislative Session. All expressed a commitment to work together to balance the budget even in light of a significantly lower revenue estimate than last biennium.

"I hope that our legislative and agency leaders will treat state budget matters no different than they would their own personal checkbooks," said Gov. Perry. "We must make prudent financial decisions, especially in light of the inevitably challenging economic times that lie before us, and we must remember that every dollar spent is the dollar of a hard-working Texan."

Gov. Perry also reiterated his desire to see greater truth in budgeting, which should begin with ending the $1.2 billion gas tax diversion that currently funds the Department of Public Safety. DPS should instead be funded out of general revenue so the gas tax fund can be used for its intended purpose to maintain transportation infrastructure.
