Congressman Issa Condemns Abuse of Iraqi Prisioners

Congressman Darrell Issa, today, on the floor of the House condemned the abuse of Iraqi prisoners and voiced support for H.Res. 627, Deploring the Abuse of Persons in United States Custody in Iraq. Congressman Issa called for a thorough investigation of Iraqi prisoner abuse and appropriate punishment for those responsible.

Congressman Issa also made the following statements:

"The abhorrent abuse of Iraqi prisoners by a few Americans has undermined our mission in Iraq and drawn attention away from the many accomplishments American military personnel and civilians have made to aid the Iraqi people.

"As a former Army soldier who enlisted and was later commissioned, I know that the American military takes great care to train and inform all personnel about their basic duty to treat prisoners humanely and with respect.

"Those found responsible for the disturbing acts the world has witnessed must face appropriate punishment."

H.Res 627:
Unequivocally condemns the abuses that occurred in Abu Ghraib prison and affirms the principle that all individuals under the custody and care of the U.S. military should be treated properly and humanely
Urges the Secretary of the Army to "bring to swift justice any member of the Armed Forces who has violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice"

Reaffirms Congress's strong support for the men and women serving in the military, expressing "deep appreciation…to the courageous and honorable members of the Armed Forces" serving in Iraq
