A Message from Senator Enzi

It has been a busy month for me since last month's e-newsletter - I spent a wonderful Christmas with my family, celebrated the start of 2009, was sworn into my third term in the U.S. Senate, witnessed the first African-American president take the oath of office and landed a spot on a Senate Finance committee I have wanted to serve on for 12 years.

I look forward to getting down to business and working on solutions to our country's problems. There is a lot to do, but I am energized and hopeful that progress can be made.

In this newsletter, my staff and I have summarized some of the issues I've been working on for Wyoming. Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter. More information is available on my Web site. I look forward to hearing from you if you have any questions or comments.

Headlines & Highlights

Stimulus Package

Senator Enzi is cautious of any stimulus plan with a trillion (or even a billion) dollar price tag. Enzi is researching all the proposed plans. He is looking to make sure any stimulus plan will have a reasonable chance of actually creating jobs, enhancing our productivity, lifting our economy out of the mire and somehow repaying the taxpayer. No plan meets all the criteria. Enzi does not believe the government can spend its way out of this crisis and that any IOUs the government makes today will be on the shoulders of our children tomorrow. Enzi proposes permanent tax relief for employees and employers as well as tax relief to help stabilize the housing market.

Finance Committee

Senate leaders announced the committee members for the 111th Congress and Enzi will serve on the Senate Finance Committee. Enzi has wanted to serve on the committee because of its jurisdiction over Social Security, trade, health care programs, taxes, energy and transportation.

On the Horizon

The Senate is debating the Lily Ledbetter bill, sometimes called the trial lawyers' bailout bill. It is then expected to take up the State Children's Health Insurance Legislation. Remaining cabinet nominations that have not been brought to a Senate vote may also be considered. I am part of a bipartisan health reform group working to prepare a bill that will insure every American through the private sector. The bill should go through the proper Senate process.
