Congressman Franks Statement on Repeal of Mexico City Policy

Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) issued the following statement regarding the President's signing of an executive order repealing the Mexico City Policy. The policy, which was first implemented in 1984 and has been in place continuously since 2001, prohibits U.S tax dollars from funding abortions overseas.

"It is a tragic irony that President Obama has moved to allow American taxpayer dollars be used to fund overseas abortions less than one week since he was sworn into office placing his hand on the same Bible used by President Abraham Lincoln, and only a few days after we commemorated the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr." Franks stated. "Both Lincoln and King are celebrated as heroes because they stood against a strong political tide for the cause of human dignity, even for those whom the Supreme Court deemed a "nonperson" and unprotectable by law. There can be no doubt that both Lincoln and King would have led the March for Life down the National Mall in defense of the unborn with as much passion as they fought for the basic human and civil rights of African Americans.

"Furthermore, this is a stunning reversal of course from the President's campaign promise, when he said on multiple occasions that we should work together to reduce the number of abortions. Now, incredibly, in one of his very first acts as President of the United States, Barack Obama has made it crystal clear that reducing the number of abortions is the farthest thing from a priority - he knows that spending American taxpayer dollars to promote and pay for abortions overseas will obviously increase the already mind-numbing number of abortions."

"It is also a slap in the American taxpayer's face, the vast majority of which would find it unconscionable to see their money spent to mercilessly kill helpless little babies in foreign countries."
