Sensenbrenner Rips Obama Decision Permitting Abortion Overseas

Menomonee Falls Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's Executive Order overturning the Mexico City Policy today:

"I am saddened by the news that President Obama has chosen to put the interests of the abortion industry ahead of the interests of taxpayers. This decision will result in the loss of countless innocent lives around the world."

"While many of my constituents struggle to pay their bills, they have a right to expect that their hard-earned tax dollars will not be used to subsidize abortions abroad."

The Mexico City Policy, which prohibits U.S. funds from going to non-governmental organizations in other countries that perform or promote abortions, was first instituted by President Reagan in 1984. Although President Clinton overturned the policy, it was reinstated by President Bush in 2001.

Sensenbrenner added, "This is hardly the type of change the American people have hoped for. The president's move today signals more of the same partisan and special interest politics of the past."

"When Congress convenes next week, Congressman Christopher Smith (R-NJ) and I will introduce legislation reinstating this important policy to defend the sanctity of human life." Sensenbrenner concluded.
