Cantwell Statement Honoring Veterans Day

U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement today honoring our nation's veterans:

"Veterans Day is a time to honor the millions of Americans who put their lives on the line for our country. We honor those who have fought to keep us safe, selflessly defended our freedom, and proudly protected our liberty. Their devotion has made our nation what it is today.

"I remember my own father. He volunteered to serve in the Air Force during World War II, and flew missions over Europe. I remember the soldiers I met when visiting the war-torn battlefields of Iraq. I think of our service members' families who struggle as their beloved children, siblings, or spouses go off to war. And I think of the hundreds of thousands of American men and women who remain in harm's way in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.

"As a nation, we have a responsibility to ensure our service members, veterans, and their families receive the benefits and recognition that they have earned and so greatly deserve. We must keep our steadfast commitment to our veterans.

"This year, I was a proud cosponsor of landmark legislation to provide post-9/11 veterans with comprehensive education benefits championed by Senator Jim Webb (D-VA). Thanks to this bill, members of the military who have served on active duty since 9/11 will have full tuition and fees at state universities fully paid for, in addition to other new benefits. For more than six decades, the GI Bill has helped generations of veterans afford college or vocational training so they can get a good job once they leave the military, 21st century veterans need 21st century benefits.

"Let us commemorate the service of America's military personnel and remember the many who have given their lives for our country on this day, and on every day. Their sacrifice is immense and our gratitude is profound."
