Statement by Senator Mark Pryor On LRAFB Housing

Senator Mark Pryor made the following statement regarding the Air Force's announcement today that the Little Rock Air Force Base housing project will be sold to HP Communities LLC. Today's announcement follows a multi-million dollar housing fiasco at the base. American Eagle Communities LLC was awarded a contract to build 468 new homes and remodel 732 homes by 2011. Only 25 homes were completed and occupied, and an estimated 70 concrete slabs were poured before the company stopped construction on May 7, 2007.

I have had numerous conversations with Air Force officials about finishing the housing that families on base deserve. I'm pleased this contract has been finalized, and I expect HP Communities LLC to move full speed ahead on this project. Our men and women in uniform and their families have waited too long already.

Over the past two years, I have worked to improve oversight and accountability in the contract process for military housing projects. I will be watching very closely to ensure these new safeguards prevent the delays and waste of taxpayer dollars that we have seen in the past from other companies.
