Governor Doyle's Statement on the International Trade Commission Decision on the Paper Industry

Governor Jim Doyle today issued the following statement regarding the determination made today by the International Trade Commission that the U.S. industry has been injured by illegal imports of Chinese and German paper:

"This morning, the domestic paper industry, including Wisconsin's paper industry, scored a significant victory. The import of lightweight thermal paper has hurt the paper industry that is so important to the Wisconsin economy. It is unfair to allow our manufacturers and their workers to fall prey to the illegal pricing strategies of global competitors who refuse to compete on fair terms. Today, the International Trade Commission agreed there is little doubt that the practices by China and Germany reflect a clear attempt by foreign competitors to grab market share at the expense of the U.S. industry.

Workers across our state work hard to help give our businesses the strongest foundation possible for future growth and competition. Given a level playing field, our companies can compete anywhere in the world. Today's ITC determination gives the Wisconsin paper industry a level playing field - one that I know we can compete and win on."
