KAUZ - Candidate Profile: Mac Thornberry, (R) 13th US Congressional Dist.

U.S. Congressman Mac Thornberry is running for a seventh term as the incumbent from the 13th District. He is running against Democrat Roger Waun.

Congressman Mac Thornberry was first elected to office in 1994. He says one of his top priorities if re-elected is getting the economy back on track. To do that... he says there are three tasks that will make it happen.

First, he says the money allocated must be spent wisely... and certainly not on executive bonuses. Next he says there must be discipline in spending that money, not allowing other federal program to be initiated. And third.... "...And third and probably most importantly, get the economy growing again. And so economic growth is going to be the key thing that, no only, improves the economy but reduces the deficit." Thornberry quickly added, the government should not raise taxes.

Another thing he says would aid the economy is some stability to the tax codes, so small business people would know how much tax they were going to have to pay. One area he thought he didn't act quickly enough in the last congressional session was on some type of energy policy.

"...We need also to push forward on energy cause the uncertainty with the ups and downs in energy prices is another uncertain factor that I think makes everybody a little slower to grow and take financial risks." Thornberry says congress must do a better job and working in a bi-partisan way to do what's right for the country. He says one way he will work against partisan politics, is to simply not to participate. And that, he says, is what he plans to do.

On Thursday, we will take a look at the challenger in the race, Roger Waun and what he stands for.
