ZIMMER DEMANDS SENATOR TED STEVENS RESIGN

- Zimmer Calls on Lautenberg to Ask for Fellow Appropriator's Resignation -

U.S. Senate candidate Dick Zimmer today called for the immediate resignation of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, who was found guilty of seven felony corruption charges in federal court yesterday. Zimmer also called on Senator Frank Lautenberg to demand Stevens' resignation.

Zimmer released the following statement:

"A culture of corruption has plagued our government for far too long. Too many people in power have manipulated the political process to criminally enrich themselves.

"The worst thing that can happen is for honest elected officials to sit idly by and say nothing. Today, I am calling on Senator Stevens to resign, and I ask that Senator Lautenberg join me in this demand. Perhaps Senator Stevens will heed the advice of someone who has served with him so long on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"After all, it is our duty as elected officials and candidates for office to speak out against public corruption and work to restore the public's trust in their elected officials."
