Issue Position: Consumer Safety

Issue Position

The safety of our health, children, and food must never be compromised through lax enforcement, weakened regulations and lack of funding for regulatory agencies. Our federal government has been charged with ensuring the safety of our food, medical, and product supplies, regardless of where they are manufactured, grown, or mined.

Raúl believes we must bring back accountability and independence to our regulatory system. The Bush Administration has turned its back on its responsibility to the American people and allowed industries to define the regulatory and enforcement processes.

This neglect in consumer safety has put sick and diseased animals into our food supply, allowed our vegetables to become tainted with e-coli, our commercial pet food quality compromised and allowed the importation of lead contaminated toys and consumer products. Raúl supports a stronger Consumer Product Safety Commission, separating industry from the regulators, and improved outreach to educate the community on re-calls and safety concerns.
