Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Today's Unemployment Report

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton made the following statement on today's unemployment report from the U.S. Department of Labor.

"The full weight of the housing crisis, the market instability, the credit crunch and the other ills of our economy are coming to bear. Today's announcement that another 159,000 jobs have been lost in September is yet another reminder that we must take a fundamentally new course for our economy.

We've suffered nine consecutive months of job losses and more than 750,000 jobs lost this year as business and families experience the brunt of a serious economic downturn that will only worsen if action is not taken now. I believe Congress must enact the market stabilization plan to address the current credit crisis that is roiling our markets. Then we must begin a comprehensive effort to rewrite the millions of mortgages that are in danger of default and foreclosure, enact reforms on Wall Street, and end the disastrous policies of the last eight years.

We can weather this storm, but we've got to start by righting this ship and enacting policies that will serve the middle class, create jobs, and prevent future financial crises."
