A record of accomplishment for the women of central New Jersey
"An effective legislator...a solid record on the environment, women's health and reproductive rights...senior citizens. And he has used his position on congressional budget and education committees to help bring research money to the area."
Asbury Park Press, October 30, 2002
Holt earned a 100% rating by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and endorsed by the National Organization for Women (NOW), Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and Business and Professional Women.
Rush Holt understands the concerns of the women of central New Jersey. He has established a strong record on the issues of reproductive choice, gender equality, education, the environment, and health issues.
Unfortunately many women still face discrimination in the workplace, from the "glass ceiling" to pay disparity. Rush believes any form of discrimination is unacceptable. He co-sponsored the Pay Equity Act, a bill that would ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work. Rush Holt has been and will continue to be a strong leader in protecting women's rights and fighting for the issues that are important to the quality of women's lives. He supports the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution and has supported legislation in both the 106th and 107th Congresses proposing its adoption.
Rush recognizes that the current Social Security system unfairly penalizes women, who generally receive lower benefits than men, and will work in Congress to see that women are treated more equitably in retirement. He will vigorously fight any effort to privatize Social Security and Medicare.
Rush is also a leader in improving our nation's health care system. In fact, the first vote of the last Congress was on a measure Rush introduced, a law to protect patients by holding HMOs legally accountable for their medical decisions. He is a cosponsor of the bipartisan Patients' Bill of Rights, which would take medical decision making out of the hands of HMO administrators and restore it to doctors and patients.
Rush created a Women's Health Forum, bringing together the top researchers, academics, activists and medical personnel to discuss advances in women's health research and to find out how Congress can best assist in this important area.
Rush co-sponsored the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act, a measure to promote research into environmental factors in that may be related to breast cancer, as well as the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act, which would ensure safe hospital stays for women who have undergone surgery.
Rush Holt has maintained clear and consistent stands when it comes to reproductive rights and gender equality. Rush doesn't believe these are women's issues, they are human rights issues. As a trustee of the Mercer Area Chapter of Planned Parenthood, Rush recognizes that supporting a woman's right to choose means opposing every effort to erode this fundamental right. For his consistent support of a woman's right to choose, Rush has earned 100% ratings from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL each year he has been in Congress.
Rush supports family planning as a means to reduce unwanted pregnancies. He fought to ensure that health insurance plans include coverage for birth control, and he continues to fight to increase our commitment to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and is fighting to increase our commitment to family planning, both at home and abroad.
Providing the best possible education for our children is one of Rush's highest priorities. As a teacher and scientist, he knows how important it is for students to receive the tools they need to compete in the information age. Rush currently serves on the House Education Committee, where he is a leader for smaller classes, increased funding for school construction, and improved math, science, and technology education. Through legislation he backed, New Jersey is receiving $35 million to support these goals.
Rush is committed to protecting the environment. He has and will continue to fight for funding to clean up superfund sites, and he co-sponsored the Clean Smokestacks Act, legislation designed to clean up the most out-dated, polluting power plants and bring emissions down to the levels that do not harm the environment.
Rush Holt fights for the issues that matter for central New Jersey women and for everyone.
