Maffei: Let's Fight to Keep Honeywell Jobs Here

It is fitting that President Bush is in China for the Olympic Opening Ceremonies right now. While he is enjoying the spectacular ceremonies, we woke up this morning to read in the paper yet another story about manufacturing jobs leaving Central New York.

Honeywell announced yesterday they plan to move 300 jobs from Central New York to China. This is another sad example of the Bush administration's failed economic policy, where they've put lofty "free" trade goals before the goal of keeping jobs here. Our government has made it financially beneficial for companies to more jobs to overseas, putting manufacturing here at an extreme disadvantage. A Vice President at Honeywell said to the Syracuse Post-Standard, "We cannot remain competitive by making products in Upstate."

While 300 jobs leaving Central New York for China is something President Bush won't be too concerned about, this is an issue I have been talking about throughout my campaign. I know keeping jobs here will determine the future of our region. While President Bush enjoys the pomp and circumstance of the Olympics, I will stay here and fight for the three hundred working families that are worried sick about their future.
