Carney Legislation to Prosecute Child Pornographers Headed for President's Desk

Press Release

Date: Sept. 26, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Christopher P. Carney¹s legislation,
Enhancing the Effective Prosecution of Child Pornography Act, took another step toward becoming law. The legislation originally passed the House on November 15, 2007 by a vote of 416 to 0. Earlier this week, the Senate attached H.R. 4136 to another vehicle (H.R. 4120) that also seeks to tighten separate laws against child pornography. Today, the House approved these two bills by a vote of 418 to 0, thereby clearing the legislation for the President's signature.

The next step is for President Bush to sign the legislation into law.

Carney's legislation allows the Justice Department to more effectively prosecute people who produce child pornography or knowingly access child pornography repeatedly with the intent to view it.

"We've been working on this legislation for awhile, and I'm pleased by the strong, bipartisan support in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. I look forward to witnessing this legislation being signed into law," said Congressman Carney.
