Tinklenberg talks health care at stop

It was part of a day's worth of events for the Democratic challenger to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann. The former mayor of Blaine and former state transportation commissioner was joined by Rep. Larry Haws, DFL-St. Cloud. Tinklenberg told the seniors that the first step to improve health care is to make sure every one is covered.

Vern Dahlheimer, who lives at Benet Court, said health care and the candidate's positive stance on keeping Social Security and Medicare and government programs is a huge issue for him.

"It would influence me strongly as a senior and a person interested all my life time," Dahlheimer said after Tinklenberg had left.

Loretta Peka, who lives in St. Cloud and works on health care issue for the Minnesota Senior Federation, decided to drop in on the discussion.

"I'm interested in the health care system. Something needs to be done and quick," Peka said.

Tinklenberg said the federal government can learn from some of the government health care programs that Minnesota has, such as MinnesotaCare.

"Minnesota does pretty well with cost containment and outcomes," Tinklenberg said. He said health care should not be a function of whether someone is wealthy.

"This has to be way at the top of the agenda in the next Congress," Tinklenberg said.

He also told the seniors he would speed up the delivery of services to veterans and make sure they have the health care they need.
