Issue Position: Immigration - English as the Official Language

I believe that English should be the official language of the United States of America. Many generations of legal immigrants came to this nation over the past 200 years, bringing with them their hopes and dreams for a better life. I believe that the commitment to learn and speak English is the key to success in America.

Speaking English allows one to assimilate fully into the American experience. I am a proud cosponsor of H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act of 2008. This bipartisan legislation would declare English to be the official language of the United States. As Theodore Roosevelt stated, "We have room for but one language in this country, and that is the English language."
