Issue Position: Tax Fairness

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Congressman Stark believes that lower and middle income Americans should not bear the majority of the tax burden while millionaires and corporations enjoy huge tax loopholes. Since Pete helped author the last major tax reform in 1986, the code has become laden with hundreds of tax breaks, mostly for the wealthiest among us. Tax fairness requires simplifying the tax code and ensuring the progressive nature of the income tax is upheld so that wealthy Americans pay their fair share of taxes.

To this end, Pete opposes President Bush's efforts to make his tax breaks for millionaires permanent. That money should be reinvested in strengthening health care, education, student loans and other programs for working families that have been slashed during the Bush reign. He is also committed to fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) so that it doesn't negatively impact middle-class taxpayers in the years to come.
