Issue Position: Financial Services - Currency, Coins and Medals

Issue Position

As a senior member and former Ranking Member of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy (DIMP), I am extensively involved in the subcommittee's work on coins, coinage, currency, and medals, including commemorative coins and medals, counterfeiting, currency denominations and design, the distribution of coins, and the operations of the Bureau of the Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. In the 109th Congress, I was the lead democrat on the Presidential $1 Coin Act, a bill which provides for a rotating dollar coin design featuring the Presidents of the United States in order of service on the model of the very successful rotating state quarter design. I was also a cosponsor of Congressional Gold medals to the Dalai Lama and the Tuskegee Airmen, and commemorative coins for the Little Rock Five, President Lincoln, and others, which became law in this Congress.

02/17/05 - H.R. 902 - Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-145) Provides for a rotating circulating dollar coin design featuring the Presidents of the United States, in order of service, in t heron, and the Stuate of Liberty on the back. Also provides for a commemorative First Spouse series.

1/25/2005 - H.R.358 (Public Law No: 109-146 ) Little Rock Central High School Desegregation 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act . Requires the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue coins commemorating the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

03/10/05 - H.R.1259. (Public Law No: 109-213) To award a congressional gold medal on behalf of the Tuskegee Airmen, collectively, in recognition of their unique military record, which inspired revolutionary reform in the Armed Forces.

4/28/2005 - H.R.1953 (Public Law No: 109-230) San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Coin Act . Directs the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins emblematic of the San Francisco Old Mint Building, its importance to California and U.S. history, and its role in rebuilding San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire.

6/8/2005 - H.R.2808 (Public Law No: 109-285) Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Coin Act - Instructs the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue $1 coins emblematic of the life and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln.

12/15/2005 - H.R.4562 (Public Law 109-287) Fourteenth Dalai Lama Congressional Gold Medal Act --Presents the Congressional Gold medal to Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, in recognition of his many contributions to peace and religious understanding

6/13/2005 - H.R.2872 (Public Law No: 109-247) Louis Braille Bicentennial--Braille Literacy Commemorative Coin Act -- Directs the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue $1 coins emblematic of the life and legacy of Louis Braille
