Issue Position: Helping New York's Family Farms Prosper
As New York's only majority member on the Agriculture Committee, Congresswoman Gillibrand has been a key voice for Upstate New York farmers and was an active participant during the reauthorization process for the Farm Bill. She has been an ardent supporter of responsible reforms that will help Upstate New York's family farmers.
Congresswoman Gillibrand successfully fought to extend the MILC program for New York's dairy farmers. In Committee, she passed an amendment which would allow small farmers to transition to organics and an amendment which will provide USDA loans to businesses that buy food from local farms. Buying local is critical for our nation's food security and reduces transportation costs and pollution.
In addition, the reformed Farm Bill also includes historic investments for land conservation, rural communities, renewable technologies and food security measures. Congresswoman Gillibrand has also sought to cut subsidies to wealthy farmers and reduce the reliance on corn to make ethanol in favor of non-food sources.
