Issue Position: Agriculture - Specialty Crops

Issue Position

The Hastings' supported Specialty Crop Competitiveness Act was approved by Congress and signed into law in 2004. This law provides for $44.5 million in federal funds for specialty crops. The grant money can be used for research and development, marketing programs and increased production technology.

As a member of the Specialty Crop Caucus, Congressman Hastings continues working to focus federal agriculture policy on expanding international markets for specialty crops, and increasing the attention specialty crops receive in trade negotiations.

Hundreds of specialty crops are grown in Central Washington including apples, cherries, potatoes, wine grapes, hops, asparagus, pears and mint.
