MARTINEZ INTRODUCES ETHANOL TARIFF ELIMINATION ACT

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today introduced an effort to eliminate the current 54 cent a gallon tariff the United States places on imported ethanol.

"It's nonsense that the U.S. government is inflating the price of ethanol - especially at a time when American families are paying record high prices for fuel," said Martinez. "Not only is this tariff costing Americans more at the pump, it's preventing us from diversifying our fuel supply."

Senator Martinez's amendment would repeal the 54 cent per gallon tariff on foreign ethanol that was extended until December 2010 under the recently passed 2008 Farm Bill.

"If we're serious about reducing gas prices in this country, removing this tariff and other arbitrary mandates created by Congress would help reduce record high fuel costs," Martinez said.

The amendment was offered to S. 3268, the Energy Speculation act that is currently under consideration in the Senate.
