Issue Position: Women in Business

As a businesswoman, I learned the hard way how difficult it is to utilize Small Business Administration benefits. Even though one-third of American small businesses are female-owned, just three percent of federal contracts go to women.

This is despite a Congressionally-mandated "goal" to grant five percent of federal contracts to women. George Bush's Small Business Administration undermined even this effort when it recently proposed a rule to limit this outreach to women in only four out of 2,300 industries. When I get to Congress, I will author new, stronger legislation, and create a five percent nationwide set-aside, not just a goal.

We need more business women in Congress who understand instinctively and through experience the challenges and opportunities that women entrepreneurs face, and who will fight for women in business every day in Washington.
