TIBERI URGES CONGRESSIONAL ACTION TO LOWER ENERGY PRICES
With Presidential Ban Lifted, Congress Must Lift Their Ban To Increase Domestic Energy Exploration
Statement by Congressman Pat Tiberi (R-OH) regarding the president's announcement, lifting the executive ban on offshore oil exploration:
"Lifting the executive ban on offshore domestic energy exploration is the first step along the path to a more energy-independent future for this country. Now it's time for Congress to come together and lift our prohibition on off-shore exploration. We'll still need individual states to lift their moratoriums against exploration off their shores, but the president's announcement today is a step in the right direction.
"Environmentally-safe energy exploration is one of the keys to creating a more energy-independent nation. We also need to be increasing domestic production of both traditional and alternative energy, like clean coal, solar, wind, and even clean safe, nuclear power. This combined with conservation will help lower our energy prices over the long-term and make us less dependent on nations that are not our friends to supply us with oil.
"I am encouraged by the lifting of the executive ban and hope Congressional Leadership will move forward with plans for a vote to lift the Congressional prohibition promptly."
Note: On June 20, 2008 Congressman Tiberi cosponsored H.Res. 1282, a resolution calling on the president to revoke the executive ban on energy production on the Outer Continental Shelf.
Congressman Tiberi is a cosponsor of H.R 3089, the No More Excuses Energy Act, a bill that would among other things lifts the current ban on offshore energy exploration. The bill would also encourage the construction of more domestic oil refineries, extend tax credits for alternative fuels like wind, encourage the use of clean, safe nuclear energy, and allow for oil exploration in a small potion of the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.
