Steve Gaw Announces Local Campaign Chair, Support for Drilling

In an interview with the Suburban Journals late last week, former Democratic Speaker of the House Steve Gaw made two key statements in his Congressional campaign. Gaw announced that Jan Carmen of Warrenton will be his Warren County Campaign Chair, and distinguished himself from his rivals by supporting offshore drilling to lower gas prices.

Gaw's Warren County Campaign Chair announcement is significant in the Democratic primary contest because of Carmen's connection to the Warren County Democratic Central Committee. Carmen, a retired firefighter, is secretary of that group. The Committee itself has not endorsed.

After his interview with the Suburban Journals in which he stated support for offshore drilling, Gaw further explained his position. "We need to lower gas prices immediately by popping the speculative bubble," said Gaw. "We must allow states to decide if they want to drill to signal that we will increase the supply of oil. That signal will lower gas prices." Gaw also supports more aggressive regulation of oil markets to lower prices in the short term.

Gaw has three opponents in the Democratic primary. The leading opponents, former State Senator Ken Jacob and State Representative Judy Baker, are both opposed to drilling offshore. Marion County Commissioner Lyndon Bode, who has lagged behind the others in fundraising, also supports drilling.
